That is brutal but it’s more or less the modern version of burning someone at a stake. The guy tied to the tree probably passed out in shock within the first minute, unless they injected him with adrenaline to keep him alive longer through out the torture… which they are known to do.

Actually, when burning at the stake, people were usually killed or choked unconscious first. The point was desecration and preventing an afterlife or some such.
