Re: Charlotte AA Employee Killed
I imagine the vehicle had a reverse alarm that was louder than their hearing protection. Ground crew are also restricted to very specific areas of the tarmac during various operations to prevent mishaps. It isn't completely clear, but it doesn't look like he is dressed like the others. For these reasons, I'm wondering if this was actually a suicide. Maybe he intended to run out to get sucked into an engine, but the plane rolled too far away. |

Re: Charlotte AA Employee Killed
When I worked doing cargo at the airport drug abuse was rampant amongst the staff, more so than at any other place I've worked. Every shift there were people falling asleep or puking up. Maybe the dude was riding on the back of the vehicle and just passed out |

Re: Charlotte AA Employee Killed
I'm a pilot. Those tugs don't have reverse alarms, the ramp area is extremely annoying, even people unknowingly walk right into running jet engines out of complacency. It's possible that in this case, the tug just disconnected the aircraft after it pulled it off the gate. There are two wing walkers that stand below the wingtips to prevent any collisions with obstacles. When the tug disconnects, it repositions so it can drive back into the gate area and there's another person up front who disconnects the headset and will hold up a tow strap or signal to the pilot's that they are all clear. If the wing walker wasn't paying attention and moved closer to the front of the aircraft and the tug driver wasn't paying attention, that's all it takes. These tugs are extremely heavy too, I wouldn't be surprised if that thing weighs 30 to 40,000 lbs. |
