I wonder if he couldn't have just shimmied his way over (to grab ahold of that wooden pillar thing) once he had his two hands on the ledge? Video shows what I'm talking about - keeping one hand as the anchor hand, moving the free hand closer to the right, and *then* releasing the anchor hand once the free hand grabs ahold of the new spot |

That's not a bad idea if you're only fighting against your own body weight but i think that water was pulling him with a lot more force than that. I don't think he had the strength to do what you're saying.
