Yes, they really exist. Primarily in Japan and China,but also a lot of other countries in Asia. Both places they have deaths from the kite strings injuring and killing people on the ground. Some of the competitions have very large prizes. It's as serious a sport as football is here, and the participants don't mess around. Since this was in Brazil, it was probably either someone who didn't know anything about kite fighting, or it was a Japanese Brazilian who was making a serious effort. I think probably the latter, as Brazil has a huge Japanese population.

The "fighting kite" strings may be doubled and twisted with bits of razor blades. These are not ordinary strings. Alternatively abrasives may be glued. |
