He tried to kill himself though, he stabbed himself in the chest several times when the cops showed up... he just didn't do enough damage to finish the job, and wasn't able to provoke the cops enough to use lethal force, they subdued him with rubber bullets and "stun bombs". That's why he's a pussy. He probably just realized getting stabbed really hurts.

And just a side note, I noticed on 2nd viewing that you can actually see the holes in his shirt where he stabbed himself when he stands up and bends forward.
