Re: Pitbull Attack on Grandmother After an Ice Bucket Challenge

It's incredibly stupid of the owner of the dog to have that dog. They are obviously clueless to the behavior traits of the breed (and many other breeds).

Screaming adult flailing around in front of kids --> Dog perceives it as threat. Note the aggression is only directed towards the one perceived as being aggressive. Also note that the attack stopped the moment the dickhead owner intervened, which means the dog had enough sense to release when it was made aware of its mistake.

This isn't a case of a bad dog... it's a case of another fucking idiot owner who is clueless about what is appropriate behavior around his dog, and hasn't trained the dog appropriately.

Re: Pitbull Attack on Grandmother After an Ice Bucket Challenge

pitbulls are one of the dumbest breeds of dog. It's can't even distinguish between play and danger here. I'll stick to border collies and shiba inus, insecure beta males can have their masculine compensating pitbull dogs

Re: Pitbull Attack on Grandmother After an Ice Bucket Challenge

I've seen border collies react in the same way, khantko. I've never seen a shiba inu in person.

A dog is only as smart as what it has been exposed to and trained. If this human behavior is new to the dog, it's not going to know how to properly react.

In general, Pit Bulls are a highly intelligent breed, like the Border Collie. You just have to train and direct them. Not just chain them up in the yard. Like any dog. Gotta put in the effort.

Re: Pitbull Attack on Grandmother After an Ice Bucket Challenge

I have been working in sheltering and rescue for 16 years now so I have seen a few bad dogs in my time. I have 2 pits BUT unless you are ready to be constantly aware of what they are doing and what is going on around them then don't get them. I'll say that for any of the powerful breeds. There is way to much room for error and one fuck up can allow something like this and worse happen. It is a major commitment if done right. Also spay and neuter, unaltlered male dogs are at the top of the list for dog bites!! =-)

Re: Pitbull Attack on Grandmother After an Ice Bucket Challenge

That's a lot of domestic animals, Pigeon. Anything with any size to it, anyway.

Horses will kill you. Pigs will kill you. Dogs will kill you. Cows will kill you. Etc. Etc. Etc. The only regulations on them is space and property zoning.
People are allowed to ride their horses down the street. What happens when the horse gets spooked and goes out of control? That happens often.

If you do not handle an animal properly, you are putting yourself and others in danger.

Dogs are NOT "safe" pets. You cannot predict their behavior 100% of the time - no matter how docile. That is why you MUST pay attention to their behavior BEFORE something happens.

You're really digging at the bottom of the barrel here comparing domesticated house pets to your barnyard animals, CrunchyCripple. You need a license to own farm animals here and you also don't have cows in your living room floor playing next to your children.

Back on topic, I do agree that it's all about irresponsible owners, not 'dangerous' dogs and essentially it's bad owners who're responsible for the breed's reputation, much like gun ownership. So like gun ownership there should be some sort of licensing system placed where pitbull owners will at the very least receive information about dog body language and safety around dogs.

Unfortunately that will never happen because it's more cost effective for governments to get rid of them than to implicate this dangerous dog program.

Re: Pitbull Attack on Grandmother After an Ice Bucket Challenge

Why is it that someone can't point out the obvious, that pit bulls can be dangerous, without people jumping in and claiming it's all a misunderstanding and they are all wonderful dogs. Training is everything. Yada yada. But the fact still remains that they are strong and determined so when agitated they can be very dangerous. It's a simple fact, no judgement. This person is lucky to be alive.

Any kind of animals can be dangerous

There are many species of animals who have the potential to be dangerous. Absolutely! Not all animals are ideal for house pets.

This should be true for ALL dogs, of all shapes and sizes - since they are all the same species. Everyone should know how to properly understand and care for the dogs they own.
