Re: I Fought the Dog and the Dog Won.

I'm so sorry this happened and that you had too put him down. Hopefully they find a reason as to what happened to him, but it does sound like something neurological. Please update us when you find out! Take care.

Edit - Sorry, just saw this happened in 2019. Hope you healed up well!

Re: I Fought the Dog and the Dog Won.

I'll explain what happened. You treated an instinctual, opportunistic predator like a human child, and forgot about his instincts. The chicken was a high-value resource. He attacked you because that was HIS resource. Nothing unusual about that. The dog was being a dog. I see this kind of thing week in, week out (I'm a dog trainer/behaviorist and former working handler).
You couldn't be more wrong. People's dogs don't just attack them over food or animals of any kind. I've had dogs all my life (including Pit Bulls) and never had a dog act remotely aggressive towards me over food or other animals.

Sometimes if there's been a lot of in-breeding then dogs can have erratic behavioral problems and lots of time violence.

wow, you fought like a hero!
Sorry for your loss. Maybe the dog knew you would be run over by a truck if you went for a run the day after, so he did it to protect you. Sorry I watch too much Netflix

Agreed large dogs should not be treated like babies.
