I Fought the Dog and the Dog Won.
Then Walton County Animal Control put him down. I had a beautiful European Great Dane. He was a monster in size. He outweighed me. He loved to wear shirts. I would put shirts on him and he was so happy. He would always walk with his face on my side and I would hold his cheek. He took up half the car And he owned the back seat of the truck. He was just over 8 years old. Yes he was a very aggressive dog and weary towards strangers. He could jump over a 6' fence at the corner easily. If anyone was to ever touch me and I were to scream, it would not end well if he could get to them. HE LOVED ME. I had noticed around the beginning of June a few little things about him he was starting to seem "different". Things I kind of started to after a week or so associate with old age. I thought maybe he was just becoming a slightly occasional cranky old man. Several days before June 26th 2019 I Found an abandoned sick puppy at a boat dock. No one would take it so I had to keep it away from the other dogs until I could get it to the local shelter when they open. She had to stay with me for about 2 days and cried like a hyaena. I could tell he is stressed out but we got her to the shelter on the 24th and hopefully she's OK. The morning of the 26 I had to leave for a doctor's appointment and i had been lounging around the house in this giant mumu of a gown. Before getting ready I looked up and there in the yard with Ganesh and Monster is one of my chickens that crows like a rooster. Well I just figured I'd go out there and shoo her out before the dogs can get her. Ganesh just watched her, he didn't do anything. Monster on the other hand was wanting to catch her. His play yard is 32' wide x 40' long. The front door is to the right. I walked in and used my new move down to try to shoo the chicken towards the door. That meant I had to walk about 20' from that door to get to her. She ran a real me back into the yard. I went to do it again and she ran again. The 3rd time I decided to use my foot to swish her out quickly I was already right at the door it was a chance for her to get her escape and me to get my day going. She ran all the way back in. I turned one last time to go get her. I was facing away from ganesh when attacked me. He blind sided me, hit me with such force it threw my phone out of my hand several feet. He laid into my right shoulder and arm dragging me backwards across the ground. My 1st thought was confusion. I was being attacked by my baby. I kept trying to think quickly he is confused it must be the chicken I've got to talk to him I tried talking to him calmly for just a moment and he just kept biting. I even went as far as trying to choke him out while he was shaking and ripping through my left arm. I knew that our neighbors to lots down had to be home because he does boat repair. I finally cried out for help. I would have done it sooner but I was afraid I would look more like prey if I started screaming. He sounded like an angry sow bear. He was trying to get over and on top of me and grind me down into the ground shaking me and biting. The noise of his voice haunts me to this day. I was losing a lot of blood. He was repeatedly attacking me, trying to get at my face and neck which left me with a large number of puncture holes all over my scalp and side of neck. It was then I had decided I was going to probably die and began to lay down and as I started to lay down, I just thought of my sons and fiance and It was almost like God was telling me to GET UP. I knew I had to try to get out. It was a quick game plan I looked at where the door of the gate was I knew I just had to get there. I got up the 1st time in staggered. I was already getting disoriented and shaking violently and sweating and bleeding everywhere. Ganesh got up-and-over on top of me pushing me to the ground with his mouth on my head. He did it again the 2nd time period my 3rd try I looked at the gate and decided I'll grab it with my hands and even if he is ripping me up I will drag myself if I have to along this gate until I can get out that door. I don't remember leaving his yard. I have a very small picture memory of walking on the back porch to go inside I remember a part of being in the living room heading towards my son's room. I remember standing in front of him saying over and over call 911. My son jumped up and ran past me when he got his phone and found it was dead. He ran out the door of the house and I screamed bloody murder I just knew he would go in that yard to get the phone and the dog would kill him. I didn't even know if I closed the gate. Somehow he managed to get the phone and call 911. I was covered in blood. Tommy said when he 1st saw me he thought somebody had broke in the house and was trying to kill me. He put a tourniquet on my arm to control the bleeding. The ambulance arrived and they said my son did the right thing. I begged these people to please shoot my dog so he couldn't attack anyone else. I did not want my other son knowing what happened it to me and come home and try to avenge me or approach the dog and get hurt or worse. Animal control came. I was told that he fought violently the entire time until they got him into the car even on 2 catch poles with 2 grown men. They reported that his face his neck and his chest was covered in blood. Due to the circumstances, my boy was put down the next day and sent for rabies testing. I can't explain what happened. But it's been a month and all I can come up with is probably doggie dimensia (?) of some sort because the last month he wasn't quite right. Something wasn't right as subtle as it was. The dog that I rescued triggered something possibly with anxiety and I think the chicken with me shoo-ing it out may have been a protective reaction? I don't know. I just have so many wonderful memories with him that this is more confusing when I try to think about it then decipher it all. I stayed several days at the hospital and had to have a nurse come to the house after that. Yesterday I had only 1 flashback. No words can describe a flashback. All The Times I've said I've had flashbacks, those were just memories. Flashbacks are a totally different monster and they are absolutely frightening. I'm taking a Molosser break from the giants for awhile. Yes long story, but a true one. I miss you, Googie. |

He was beautiful, I'm sorry that someone you considered your baby and best friend turned know you like that it's very sad. Doggy dementia is real idk if it makes the aggressive though. Either way glad you're safe hope you are recovering well |

This is so sad. I hope you mend soon and I hope they find a reason for his behaviour so you're not left guessing.

Jesus, I’m sorry you had to endure that and also for your loss. I’m also going to guess cancer/brain tumor or canine dementia. I had a poodle who had dementia at the end and he would seem like he didn’t know who I was and would attack.

Re: I Fought the Dog and the Dog Won.
Wonder what kind of odd behaviour he showed as in dog dementia it usally has these symptoms: acing, anxiousness and disorientation Staring for long periods of time, getting lost in corners and seeming to be lost in familiar places Peeing/pooping in the house: First, rule out any medical issues first as this can be common with other diseases Withdrawing: This could be as simple as ignoring beloved family members Barking for no reason: This is what our senior dog, Bruisy, does sometimes and I’m watching this behavior Appetite changes, which can be both loss of appetite or increased hunger Sleeping pattern changes: Watch for behavior like sleeping during the day and being awake and confused at night. Not responsive to your voice: Rule out hearing loss first. Any other behaviors that might be unusual for your dog. anyway it's a nightmare for dog owners seeing their beloved ones change and turn against them. You were lucky to be alive and you should cherish the great moments you shared together instead of reliving the last stadium. |

At least one lucky break was that he attacked you instead of your boys. My best guess too would be dementia. It makes some old people mean and aggressive so why not dogs as well?
