Re: Birth Defects and Eugenics
my oldest son has a congenital deformity. klippel traunaney syndrome; it's a left sided hemi-hypertrophy with hemangiomas. his is a very mild case though, others have lymphatic involvement, AVMs, internal hemangiomas. you can only see that his left hand is very fat, it's unnoticable anywhere else on his body because it's so minor now. and the hemangiomas are flat, like little pink birthmarks except you can see each tiny cappilary when you look closely. these come and then fade away. he also has a cavernous angioma in his left brain, it just means that there is a vein in his brain that is over dialated. he has a .01% increased risk for a brain bleed. 1% of the normal population has a cavernous angioma. how did he get KTS? something unknown goes wrong genetically in the 14th week. it's an anomoly. you can't inherit it or pass it on. it's not caused by a terratogen. i didn't do anything to cause it in my pregnancy. just happens. he's healthy, healthier than most young men. he did over a 100 mile backpack once and climbed mt whitney. he's a better rockclimber than i am. he runs, he used to trail run mtns when he lived here. he's a great daddy to his two children. i'm glad i do not yet live in a nation where it's a crime to carry a baby to term who is different. they asked me to take an Alpha-fetoprotein test and after a little research on it, i refused to take it. i was pestered for weeks. i'm sure if i had taken it and failed i would have been further pestered for an amniocentisis, if that had failed i would have been counseled to abort. i never would have, i'm much stronger than that. but what a horrible thought, think of what the world might have missed out on. |

Re: Birth Defects and Eugenics
it all depends on what you believe, as well as the circumstances of the matter with the child in the womb. fortunately, there are good people out there that are more than willing to bring a life into this world, even though their circumstances, faces, and/or features are different than others. maybe take that into thought or consideration next time. just throwing that out there.
