Birth Defects and Eugenics

Here is a quick collection of various birth defects, some are considered dangerous and severe deformities. This is a very interesting topic today and in the past.

Throughout history such deformities were considered taboo in certain cultures. The term "bad seed" was used often when describing deformed people.

Early governments and societies believed that selective breeding could and would eventually destroy all traces of this "bad seed" and the future of mankind would be cleared forever of all deformities. This is called Eugenics. But they didn't realize that mutation is a primary factor in evolution, and no matter how many bad genes are destroyed, more will follow. Some mutations are purely genetic and unavoidable while others are man-made due to malnutrition, drugs and other external influences.

Eugenics was and still is practiced often. In early Spartan history, deformed babies who were distasteful or apparently unfit for Apoge would be killed at birth. Hitler adapted this primitive method and started German's selective infanticide policy. This very idea was part of the genocidal campaign Hitler was responsible for and hundreds of thousands of children became victims of this poorly researched theory.

Present cultures still limit deformed or handicapped people. In North Korea, for example, such people are virtually on constant house arrest, because they do not meet the standards of the ideal attractive society.

Genocide is a lazy approach towards engineered evolution. Modern genetics research uncovered many doors toward self-evolution. Gene therapy will be the "cure all" one day by engineering and programing hereditary information on a molecular level. Some even believe that we can engineer evolution to the point of man becoming gods. And in this future, we will never worry about poor infants ending up like this... At least I hope.

Evolution is a merciless struggle, and more than often, it's our babies who pay the price.

Some of these may be reposts, but I just wanted an extensive collection on the birth defects, and how they vary from eachother.

Re: Birth Defects and Eugenics

For reference... the child in the fourth picture with the split nose has a condition called Frontonasal Dysplasia. The one in the fifth picture has Treacher Collins syndrome. And the one with the unibrow has Cornelia De Lange syndrome.

Re: Birth Defects and Eugenics

Wrote a 20 page paper on eugenics for psych history last semester

Still have hope that someone can get positive eugenics to work without being stupid like with the fitter family contests.

Hadn't seen most of those pics before, thanks.
