I believe the shaft splintered. At first I thought the splintering was needles holding bones together. I don't think it's that bad of an ouchy as it missed bone for the most part.

I'm wondering if he didn't pull the arrow back too far and skewer himself. You are supposed to pull the bowstring back in a continuous 'flow' with steadily increasing pressure. People that are unskilled in archery often find the last part of the pull of the bowstring difficult and tend to want to jerk back hard. That can cause the arrow to be pulled farther back than it should be. Then, when the bowstring is released... I almost skewered myself a few times a long time ago. |
