Re: Apparently Doctors Do This in Order to Save the Limb
I am new here and realize this is an ancient post, but I hope this is ok. For anyone exploring old posts and curious, this procedure is call a rotationplasty and yes it will be left that way permanently. It is usually done on young people who have cancer in the end of the femur nearest to the knee. This allows the surgeon to remove the cancerous part of the leg (usually lower femur, knee, and bones just below knee) without losing the entire leg. They move the lower leg up and rotate the foot so that the ankle works like a new knee. This keeps nerves and blood flow intact and it is much easier to deal with a prosthetic leg if you have what functions as a knee. |

It is not temporary. It is put on backwards so that the ankle can function as a knee joint when using a prosthetic.

Recently watched a documentary on this subject. The backwards portion of the foot is fitted for a prosthetic limb and the calcaneal mimics the plantar.

Re: Apparently Doctors Do This in Order to Save the Limb
It's a proccedure used to help you walk again. The foot (ankle) is attached to the thigh so that the ankle aligns with the other knee joint. Thus creating a faux knee joint for the other leg. |
