Couldn't find the video I was looking for, but here is a different one in relation to why this procedure happens. It's uncommon, although generally done due to cancer in or around the knee, with the tissue below and above in healthy condition. The leg & ankle become the new knee joint. |

Yes I've seen a case of this in real life quite a few years ago now and believe it or not it's a common practice in certain circumstances  |

The ankle actually act as the knee for the prosthetic. It gives more mobility. Look up rotationplasty ;)

This procedure is used to create a viable environment to host a type of prosthetic that has a functioning "knee" using the ankle joint. Not as common as it should be considering the benefit of having a live joint.

They put the leg on backwards so the patient can have a functioning knee (their ankle) when it heals. If it heals...

The heel acts as a knee joint inside a prosthetic, which is why the leg is backwards like that.

the ankle acts as a knee. the flesh in her foot and shin were good, healthy tissue so could be saved, watch this |

I am just a regular left below the knee amputee. I can do whatever i want with my prosthetic leg on. I know a few above the knee amputees and they have a more difficult time. Most of the power when you walk comes from your knee. This is closer to being a below knee amputee. i met a kid who had this done and he walked as well as a below knee. he had to relearn to move his ankle to make it work as his knee.
