Re: Apparently Doctors Do This in Order to Save the Limb
The leg stays that way, but enables a flexing and controlled 'knee' joint when the ankle and foot are fitted into a prosthesis. Takes some adjustment - but better than a full prosthesis I guess?

Re: Apparently Doctors Do This in Order to Save the Limb
The heel of the foot is now the "knee" and fits into a flexible joint mechanism...

Re: Apparently Doctors Do This in Order to Save the Limb
they are probably keeping the leg so that the foot can be taken off and she can wear a prosthetic leg. you have to have some sort of stub to wear one on. thus the direction the foot is facing doesnt matter because they would have to chop it off later to leave a usable stump that could fit into a prosthetic.

Re: Apparently Doctors Do This in Order to Save the Limb
So many f-ing idiots here. I apologise for digging up the topic, but all those posts here are just ignorant. This is done because of bone cancer at the knee. The lower part of the leg is saveable and when placed like this, the ankle acts like a knee when using a prostesis. With the right therapy movement in the ankle is possible and that way a person can walk and do many things, which wouldn't be possible with a prostesis from the thigh down. |

Re: Apparently Doctors Do This in Order to Save the Limb
Her foot actually became her knee joint! By having her foot that way, she is now able to use a prosthetic and it bends "naturally!" |
