I totally agree with you. My interpretation is they are devasted and probably shocked. They may have witnessed their father killling mother unless I read it wrong. Its amazing what the human physic (or how ever you spell it ) can endure and still live. if that was my mom I would want to die right there with her.

You are not wrong - at least not according to the impression I got from the story. The kids watched their father kill their mother - and he then left them alone with her corpse.
