The Shocker's Mix 19

Some of the stuff I work on doesn't make the cut so I thought about gathering them up in a single post. So basically it's images I have little or no info about or I've decided that they don't get their own thread, for example, because of low image/content quality, lack of backstory or additional info/knowledge, possibly uninteresting, only one image but not very special. I still do the usual image work including upscaling and color correction as needed, as I prefer to have my content high quality and educational.

Fig1.1 Detruncation after a fall from a height in rough terrain.

This individual fell from a height in rough terrain, and the body was cut in half from the fall. Detruncation (hemicorporectomy or truncal transection), which is complete separation of the trunk below the shoulders and above the hips.

It can be quite difficult to determine whether an injury is fatal or to predict the outcome in a prehospital setting. In addition to the aforementioned definitive signs of death, there are several body states that are incompatible with life. Catastrophic injuries include decapitation (beheading), which is separation of the head from the trunk; massive destruction of the skull and brain, with loss of brain matter; detruncation, through major organs and vessels; and incineration (charring of all observable body surface). These are conditions in which resuscitative efforts should be withheld.

This individual fell from a height and suffered fatal destruction of the head with a loss of a large part of the brain. No further info.

Fig3.2 Animal predation on the left hand.

Skeletonization of the head, neck, and the left hand due to animal predation in a body that was found in a forest.

Skeletonization in bodies found outdoors can be partially a result of predation by animals. Depending on altitude, there may be insects, such as flies or beetles that feed on soft tissue. Larger animals also can eat soft tissue, especially in areas in which skin is not covered by clothing.

Postmortem animal interference of human corpses or remains is a well known phenomenon to forensic death investigators, the morphological appearance of these injuries can be misinterpreted by police officers investigating the suspected crime scene or by the consulted medical practitioner.

Frequently the face, hands and legs are destroyed by postmortem animal interference as they are unclothed and thus easily accessible. However there are cases where such lesions having been noted in other areas of the body which have been covered by the cloths including genitals but they are rare.

Fig4.1 Crushed head from fall from height.

This individual committed suicide by fall from height, no further info. A crushing brain injury causes damage to the brain, blood vessels, and skull, each of which can be life-threatening: A skull fracture exposes the brain to further damage by robbing the brain of its protective case. Further, fragments of the skull may puncture the brain or blood vessels, causing more damage.

Fig5.1 Contact wound of the right temple with evisceration of the brain.

Contact wound of the right temple with evisceration of the brain. Note soot at the entrance site. In the typical contact wound of the head, the entrance site is easy to locate, as large quantities of soot will be found at it. The edges of the wound will be seared and blackened. The entrance is often bisected by large lacerations extending across the top of the head. Fragmentation of the skull usually occurs. The exit site of the pellets may not be found because of missing fragments of bone and scalp, the massive comminuted fractures of the skull, and extensive lacerations of the scalp.

Fig6.1 The vintage pistol replica.

This individual committed suicide with a vintage pistol replica by shooting himself in the mouth, no further info. Suicide using gunshot is a comparatively frequent event, especially in countries were gun laws are more relaxed, where such phenomenon has spread so much that such suicide method is now one of the most frequently observed. As everyone knows, most gunshots through the mouth are suicidal and actually account for a high proportion of them. Therefore, such injuries hardly ever raise the question of distinguishing suicidal from homicidal forms.

In intraoral shotgun wounds, soot is present on the palate, the tongue, and sometimes the lips. Stretch-like striae or superficial lacerations of the perioral skin and nasolabial folds often occur because of the sudden transient “bulging out” of the face, caused by the temporary cavity and the gas. Lacerations of the tongue can also occur.

Great Job! All of these photos were especially gruesome.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be getting back to my BBQ ribs dinner.
