Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Some colour pictures of Rolf Stommelen's massive crash during the Spanish GP of 1975 at the Montjuich Park street circuit in Barcelona. Rolf was leading an incident packed race in his Embassy - Hill- Lola when on lap 26 his rear wing broke and the car flew onto and over the barriers fatally injuring five spectators and the driver suffering a broken leg, a broken wrist and cracked ribs. Rolf would make a full recovery but sadly lose his life in an IMSA Camel GT crash in 1983. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
A horrible double fatality during the 1973 Campeonato Gaúcho de Divisão 3 Brazilian touring car race when Pedro Carneiro Pereira and Ivan Iglesias crashed and burned. Both cars touched on the main straight and climbed an embankment which launched the vehicles into the air hitting the track hard and barrel rolling. Iglesias car exploded, the flames then engulfed Pereira's Chevy Opala who was conscious and trapped in the overturned car. It appears that Iglesias was dead on impact but Pereira was desperately trying to smash his way out of the rear window, shouting for help. But tragically the help at hand was not good enough, a handful of local firemen with inadequate extinguishers, Pereira perished in the flames. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Stefan Johansson's practice crash at the 1987 Austrian GP when he crested a rise on the Österreichring circuit and hit a deer running across the track at 140mph. The deer had been seen running around close to the track for some time prior to the incident and this in part, led to the race being dropped in 1988. The McLaren's front left suspension was wrecked and the car hit the barrier hard, destroying its carbon fibre monocoque. Stefan was very lucky to walk away with no injuries other than a headache, but it would have had a much more serious outcome if the car had hit the deer head on.... Stefan always seemed to be at the right team at the wrong time. A Ferrari driver during the relatively uncompetitive years of 1985 to 1986 and then at McLaren in 1987, after this he could not pick up top line drives and went to Indy car racing in 1992. He never managed to win an F1 race or an Indy car race. He finished 2nd four times, 3rd on eight times, finishing 5th overall in 1986. In 1997 he won Le Mans and the Sebring 12 Hour races. Over five Indy car seasons his best results were four 3rd place finishes. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Original post on page 62. The second photo is a new one for the thread, Mullers Porsche 908 Turbo running wide, trying to avoid a spinning car on lap 17 of the 1981 1000 km at Nurburgring. This would not have been an issue had the Porsche 935 of Bobby Rahal not have broken down at that point, parked by the side of barrier at Klostertal and full of fuel. Mullers hit the parked vehicle at speed and both cars erupted into flames. By the time Muller was pulled from the burning wreck he was beyond help. Herbert won the Targa Florio twice, in 1966 and '73, both for Porsche. He took part in one non-championship GP at Pau in 1963, finishing 5th. He also finished 2nd at Le Mans in 1971 and '74. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Manfred Winkelhock's badly damaged Kremer Racing Porsche 962C after crashing into the wall at turn two during the Budweiser 1000km World Endurance Championship event at Mosport Park 1985. Manfred was trapped under the steering wheel, unconscious with very serious head and leg injuries. Emergency surgery could not save him and sadly Wicklehock died the next day. Manfred was a seriously fast driver but never had the cars to get the results he deserved. He took part in 47 F1 races with a best result of 5th, his best finish in F2 was 2nd, he won the Monza 1000km in 1985, a winner of multiple races in the German Sportscar Championship and the 1981 Macau touring car race. |

This is a rare photo of the damage to the rear of Didier Pironi's Ferrari after stalling on the startline of the Canadian GP 1982 and being hit by Riccardo Paletti's Osella. Riccardo sadly lost his life due to huge chest injuries. There are lots of posts of the crash in this thread.
