German driver Paul Greifzu's fatal crash during practice at Dessau, an event held on a stretch of Autobahn in East Germany 1952. Travelling at speed the engine seized and sent Greifzu spinning off the circuit.

Spike Gehlhausen's huge crash in practice at Indy 1988, his last attempt at the race he qualified in 4th for in 1980 and finished 10th in '79. Spike finished in the top ten 15 times in the USAC and CART Championship series with a best finish of 4th position in 1980 at Ontario.

I don't believe so. I read a description of it in 1965. The picture showed up on this forum last year (2012) posted by Mansonturtle.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

Some possibly new to this thread photos of the tragic 1964 Indy 500 crash that took the lives of Eddie Sachs and Dave MacDonald.

MacDonald spun his Mickey Thompson owned 'Sears-Allstate Special' coming out of the fourth corner of the second lap after appearing to lose it after getting too close to Walt Hansgen's car in front. He hit the angled inner wall, the car exploding and running back onto the track. Poor Eddie Sachs had nowhere to go as the flaming MacDonald rolled up towards the top of the track. A second explosion rocked the crowd as Sach's car hit MacDonald's amidships.

Other cars managed to get through, some hitting the burning wrecks that had the drivers trapped in them. Johnny Rutherford hit Sachs hard from behind but somehow came out the other side of the inferno alive.

Some spectators spoke of seeing both drivers attempting to get out of the blazing cars, but both were unable. It took some time to put out the fire, perhaps over ten minutes. Sachs was found dead in his car, a white sheet was placed over him. MacDonald was cut out, somehow still breathing but died of his injuries within a couple of hours, mainly from inhailing the flames and smoke.

An hour and a half later the race re-started and A.J. Foyt went on to win his second 500 in a Watson, the last time a front engined car would win at the brickyard.

Some photos taken from the crowd that surfaced last year...very scary crash from which the drivers stood no chance.

Carlos Reutemann crashes through the catch fencing and into the barrier on lap 57 of the 1978 Spanish GP in his Ferrari 312T2, luckily with no injury.

Carlos took part in 146 GP's with 12 wins and 45 podiums.

Another 'off' for Carlos Reutemann this time at the non-championship F1 Race of Champions at Brands Hatch in 1974 in his Brabham BT44.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)

It's the opening lap of the 1970 Spanish GP and Jack Oliver discovers as he attempts to slow down his BRM P153 for the hairpin that he has no brakes, his stubaxle has snapped. He attempts to 'straight line' the corner as much as he can but has little control over his machine.

Jacky Ickx is just about to accelerate out of the hairpin in his Ferrari 312B when Oliver's BRM T-bones him at high speed. Both machines are full of fuel and erupt into a fireball.

Oliver is the first to run out, apparently unscathed, but Ickx doesn't follow. He can be seen struggling with his harness. Just when it seems that another driver is about to be lost Ickx runs out of the flames, the back of his overalls on fire. He runs over to the side of the track and marshals eventually put him out.

The level of fire-fighting from the marshals was more akin to the keystone cops. They sprayed liquid all over the track causing a number of cars to spin and allowed the BRM to roll from one side of the track to the another.

Oliver was not injured, but Ickx suffered with his burns for a number of months.

Some more quality pictures from Spain 1970.

An off in practice for Vittorio Brambilla the 'Monza Gorilla' at the French GP 1974 in a March.
Picture of the actual crash, shows how heavy it was and look at that wheel fly....
