Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Derek Daly's crash at the Michigan International Raceway in 1984 during the 200 mile race. He incured huge injuries particularly to his legs. 'On lap 26 of the Michigan 200 in September 1984, I was almost killed when I had the worst crash of my racing career. A light mist began to fall as I entered turn three. I lost control and hit the concrete wall head on at a speed of approximately 206 mph. The car literally exploded around me. The doctors told me I had survived the hardest impact that a driver had ever survived. The car disintegrated. Injuries included, a crushed left ankle, part of front of the lower tibia joint was removed, most of a left foot toes were amputated, a compound fracture to left tibia, multiple fractures to left fibula, fractured left hip socket, multiple fractures to pelvis, broken ribs left side, multiple fractures to left hand, third degree burns to left arm, severe dislocations of right foot and ankle, deep abrasions and soft tissue loss to right heel, internal bleeding that was believed to have been caused by a lacerated liver.' Amazingly Derek fought back from these huge injuries to make a comeback in '85 and finished 3rd in the Milwalkee race in '87 for his best finish in Indy cars. He finished 9th in the 1988 Championship with seven top-ten finishes. Daly had finished 3rd twice overall in the European F2 Championship, winning three races before taking part in sixty four F1 races (with fourty nine starts) with best results of two 4th places. He also finished 4th at the 1988 Le Mans 24 hours race in a Jaguar. |

Ayrton Senna chops his McLaren across Nigel Mansell's Ferrari on lap 48 of the 1989 Portuguese Grand Prix taking them both out of the race while battling for second place. What complicated matters was that Mansell was being black flagged as he had over-shot his pit during a tyre change and had illegally reversed in the pit-lane and had not come in to be disqualified, stating he could not see the black flag. Mansell was given a one race ban for his actions. Mansell's Ferrari team mate Gerhard Berger went on to win the race. |

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Some possibly new to this thread photos of the tragic 1964 Indy 500 crash that took the lives of Eddie Sachs and Dave MacDonald. MacDonald spun his Mickey Thompson owned 'Sears-Allstate Special' coming out of the fourth corner of the second lap after appearing to lose it after getting too close to Walt Hansgen's car in front. He hit the angled inner wall, the car exploding and running back onto the track. Poor Eddie Sachs had nowhere to go as the flaming MacDonald rolled up towards the top of the track. A second explosion rocked the crowd as Sach's car hit MacDonald's amidships. Other cars managed to get through, some hitting the burning wrecks that had the drivers trapped in them. Johnny Rutherford hit Sachs hard from behind but somehow came out the other side of the inferno alive. Some spectators spoke of seeing both drivers attempting to get out of the blazing cars, but both were unable. It took some time to put out the fire, perhaps over ten minutes. Sachs was found dead in his car, a white sheet was placed over him. MacDonald was cut out, somehow still breathing but died of his injuries within a couple of hours, mainly from inhailing the flames and smoke. An hour and a half later the race re-started and A.J. Foyt went on to win his second 500 in a Watson, the last time a front engined car would win at the brickyard. |

I think I've posted this picture before but its such a powerful image its worth doing again. Poor Eddie Sachs body is covered by a sheet before the car and lifeless driver are towed away to the pits to be removed away from the spectators.

Re: Indy/Formula One: Fatal and Non Fatal Crash Photos (Stop Motion, Color, B&W)
Derek Warwick flips his Arrows into the sandtrap during practise for the German GP at Hockenheim 1993. Derek never got the break in F1, he was good enough to win races but never had a car capable of it. He had two 2nd and three 3rd place finishes during 1984 and finished 7th overall in the Championship. He won the World Sportcar Championship in 1992 as well as Le Mans. He was British F3 Champ in 1978. Derek was a keen supporter of his brother Paul's motor racing career and it was a terrible loss for the Warwick family when Paul lost his life in British F3000 race in 1991. · · · |
