Re: Hurricane Florence Flood Victim

I obviously misunderstood you--my apologies.

It sounded a bit to me--and again, this was apparently my own misunderstanding--like something a local newsperson said after Katrina. There was footage of people looting stores and he angrily yelled about how they were criminals. I told him that unless he had ever had a family to worry about after a massive hurricane and weeks with flooding and no power, not to judge the people who were in that situation. I guess I'm still a little touchy about that.

You see what I mean? "Those folks in the Donner Party--that was DISGUSTING! I'd rather starve than eat human flesh!" Yeah, well, until you actually face that situation and make the choice to die instead of having Cattleherder Stew, don't tell ME how superior you are to those people. :-/

Again, sorry about misunderstanding you.
It is completely ok! The internet can be hard to get the right point across at times. I should have chosen my wording better. :) I completely agree with you. No one truly knows how they will respond in an emergency situation. Some look at people during disasters with such disdain and disgust...I was part of a rescue group right after Katrina. I saw houses completely leveled to the ground and people who were watching their families go without food. Dang right I would be doing whatever I could to feed my family. (Same with the Donner Party). I just hope that this story doesn’t lose interest. There are a lot of questions that need answers and those families deserve the TRUTH.

Re: Hurricane Florence Flood Victim

Its like the dumb girl that crossed a barrier to a flooded tunnel with her car. She kept driving deeper and deeper until the car shut off. I dont remember but the car was afloat for like 30 or more minutes and she didnt do shit. I dont know if its shock "I mean, its not even that fucking deep" or stupidity.
I think we may be talking about the same video! I mean if you knowingly go past a barrier, in my opinion, what happens next is on you. That barrier was placed there as a warning, which you chose not to heed. And for this particular case,is why those officers should be held accountable! Those women weren’t able to make the choice to stay behind the barrier or not and yet somehow they were the only ones to pay with their lives

That is a perfectly valid observation, too. Human stupidity is astonishingly powerful, and it accounts for a lot of behavior that is impossible to explain otherwise.

Last year one of my neighbors complained that someone had gone through her car during the night and taken things. She admits that she left the car unlocked. One of the things taken was her handgun, which she left in the unlocked car. :-( St0000000pid.

First, thank you for being a nice person, when I misunderstood what you were getting at. And second, I don't know what the scoop on this is, but I saw a headline saying (apparently) the cops stopped at the barrier but the National Guard guys waved them through it. :-) I couldn't stand to read the actual story--too much of this stuff makes you crazy.

But the bottom line to this story remains: people die for stupid reasons all the time, and some of the time its their own stupid choices that drives it.

A few years ago, not far from here, a grade-school kid was playing with friends, after school, at his grandmother's house. One of the kids found Granny's pistol, and they played with it for a few minutes. Then one of the little pals was shot, and died.

Granny told the news person who interviewed her: "Ain't nothing you can do about things like that--children just love to play with guns."

Granny, maybe if you hid the gun better it wouldn't have happened? Or the guy 20-some years ago, near here I believe, who heard his telephone ringing at 2am, went to pick it up, got his .38 instead of the phone, and shot himself fatally trying to say "Hello, who is this?" into the trigger guard or something. :-(

People are stupid.

Re: Hurricane Florence Flood Victim

I don’t understand how anyone that’s able bodied dies in a sinking car.

Hold on, hold on. I know it’s very hard to open the door when water pressure is against it.

But you have feet. You have hands. You have elbows. You very likely have something in your car that’s capable of shattering a side window.

Do you accept your fate and scream about it, or do you fight like hell to get out of that car?
How could anyone expect them to get out of a prisoner transport van? It doesn’t matter if they were restrained or not, those vans are locked from the outside. If the two sheriff’s deputies couldn’t get them out from the outside than they had zero chance. None. We can’t compare this to a regular person not having the sense to break a window. Seeing that dumb girl drown with her cellphone made me go out and but one of those glass hammers. If I’m going to end up on DR I would prefer it not be because of my own stupidity lol.

There’s a HUGE difference of people looting stores to feed their families and people looting stores for NIKES, flat screen TVs, etc like people were doing during Katrina. So I agree that some of those people were criminals. You are in a diaster area with no electricity why you need a new tv? Why you need Jordans? You need food and clothing. And don’t be stealing 50$ T-shirts, it’s flooded & fonky, you gonna be ruining it in a day.

OK, think about this: all the food and water is gone from the grocery stores--and there are few to be found in the Lower Ninth Ward, which is not that far from where I was born and raised.

So the only thing you CAN steal is the big TV or a few boxes of sneakers. Why take those? Maybe to try to TRADE for a few bottles of water so your baby will stop crying. Maybe to try to trade for a couple of cans of beans so you aren't so terrified your grade-schooler is going to starve to death?

As I said before, if you aren't IN that situation, it becomes much more difficult to judge the behavior of those who are.

When water is seeping into the car while submerged, you literally cannot open the door no matter how strong you are. You are trying to push against the weight of the entire body of water. Try lifting 5 5-gallon jugs stacked on top of each other and see if you can do it.

Also try to break a windshield while confined inside the cramped spaces of the car. You need a very pointed object in order to do it - foot is not nearly enough due to high area compared to leg strength.

Victims have been found with fingers and hands clawed into a bloody pulp, it's extremely hard to get out once water starts seeping into the car.

Once the car has filled completely the pressure will equalize and the door will open like normal, but a lot of times victims don't realize this and are resigned with death at that point. Brains > Brawn in this case.

I have been IN that situation. I too am from Louisiana.
