Khmer is pretty tough to translate, but the story seems to have changed in the 3 weeks since her suicide. Apparently SHE was the 'other woman.' She was estranged from her husband, but involved in an affair with a married co-worker (who may have been another staffer or an actual elected official). Someone allegedly hacked her FB account and tried to blackmail her by publicizing the affair. Her response was to hang herself in her vacation rental.  That at least lends a little bit of weight to all of the murder allegations the public was raising, but the handwriting in the notes (she left several) was determined to be hers and the scene evidence all strongly supported suicide, so that's what is on record. I happen to agree, amateur that I am. |

Major Updates in this case today. Making headlines all over Cambodia. Apparently it was murder after all. Huge scandal now. Like, major. I will update for those interested as news breaks (and it is so so so hard to translate Khmer, so it takes me some time). But the short of it is that she was shtupping the goddam provincial governor, who was married. His wife (whose father was a major political supporter of his) found out and ordered him to break it off. When he did, the girl threatened to expose the affair. So he had her assassinated and his brother, the fucking POLICE COMMISSIONER put together an entire team to cover it all up, forge suicide notes, and make the murder scene look like a suicide. She was allegedly, according to one of the confessions, suffocated with a pillow and strangled on the bed, while on her back. They then planted her finger and footprints on the wall to make it look like she'd climbed up and hung herself. Her hands were placed inside the noose to mask the finger marks on her neck from where one of the assailants hands were around her throat. They changed the bedsheets (she'd pissed all over them when she was being suffocated) and burned the soiled ones. Letters she had written were altered and damaged to appear like suicide notes. The governor adamantly denies having any part in it and claims that if it was murder, it was set up by his jealous wife and his brother without his knowledge. Confessions have been taken regarding the coverup, the planting of evidence, cleaning up the crime scene, etc, but no one has been directly fingered for the murder yet and there is nothing aside from these confessions to link it to the governor. Will update as I can. |
