Police Chase Stolen Bus That Catches Fire

The chase started near 46th Street and State Avenue about 10:30 a.m on 13th September 2010 and weaved on and off Interstate 70 and Interstate 635. Police said man intentionally hit three vehicles during the pursuit.
The bus was eventually stopped at 34th Street and Parallel Parkway just before 11 a.m. The driver, a man in his 40s, was taken into custody after the bus caught fire. It is believed the tires caught fire.

Stephen Donnell, 47, of KCK was charged Friday afternoon with aggravated burglary, robbery and eluding a police officer. Monique Madison, the ATA bus driver, told KMBC that the suspect immediately began acting aggressively when he got on the bus.

"He grabbed my arm brusquely and pulled me out of the seat," she said. "He said, 'Hey! I'm taking this bus, I'm taking this bus!' I was like, 'Hey, you can have it!'"

Madison said the suspect reached into his pocket and she was scared he was armed. The driver said she made sure the half dozen or so passengers, including a woman with a baby, got off.

Amber Cantrell said she will never forget seeing the chase and the smile on the suspect's face.

"I hear these sirens getting closer and I see this bus with the back wheels on fire. And the guy was driving and he was just smiling the whole freaking way," she said. "I'll never forget his face. He was just smiling, running from the police. And I was like Oh my God, there's a high speed chase with a bus."

Cindy Baker of the ATA said the runs the Quindaro route. Madison was on a layover at the old Indian Springs Mall. After the man took off, Madison flagged down nearby police officers who pursued the bus. Madison was shaken, but not hurt.

"Luckily, there were some Kansas City, Kan., police officers nearby," Baker said.

Baker said the officers responded quickly and she's glad no one was hurt.

Madison said she had been working as a bus driver for almost six years.

Police said Donnell attempted to carjack someone at a motel in the 4800 block of State Avenue just before the bus was hijacked.

Donnell was arrested in a cemetery, authorities said. His bond was set at $25,000.
