Mantua Officers Fatally Shoot Man Outside His Home
On Sept. 14, 2021, around 1:35 a.m., two uniformed Mantua Township police officers responded to a home on Elm Avenue in Mantua, New Jersey. Charles Sharp III, 49, called 911 and reported that several people were trespassing on his property, including a person armed with a gun. When officers arrived, they encountered Sharp outside the house. During the encounter, one officer fired his service weapon, fatally wounding Sharp. A detailed replica of a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun was found near him. Officers and medical personnel gave first aid. Sharp was taken to Jefferson Washington Township Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:49 a.m. The shooting remained under investigation.
