On October 21, 2025, shortly after 1 a.m., Jersey City Police Department Street Crimes Unit officers encountered Teshawn Rogers, 27, in the area of Bergen and Virginia avenues in Jersey City.

Rogers was walking north on Bergen Avenue when two plainclothes officers in an unmarked vehicle pulled to the side of the road ahead of him. Rogers immediately discharged a firearm and ran south. The officers in that first vehicle did not fire.

A second police vehicle with more Street Crimes Unit officers pulled to the side of the road as Rogers ran south. Officer Lance Jackson got out from the passenger side and fired, striking Rogers.

Emergency medical aid was given before Rogers was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 1:44 a.m. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
