On May 27, 2024, at about 10:41 a.m., Franklin Borough Police Sgt. William Grissom was on duty in a marked police vehicle, driving south on Route 23 in Franklin Borough, New Jersey.

His vehicle collided with a black Honda Prelude that was exiting the ShopRite parking lot near Route 23 and Walsh Street. The Honda was crossing Route 23 and emerged from behind vehicles stopped in traffic on the northbound side of the road.

Sgt. Grissom called in the crash and rendered medical aid to the Honda's occupants. Deanna D'Arco, 19, of the Borough of Sussex, was the front-seat passenger and suffered life-threatening injuries. She was taken to Morristown Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

The Honda's driver and Sgt. Grissom were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The encounter is under investigation by the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability.
