On September 6, 2025, Chicago police responded to a burglary-in-progress call near 800 N. Waller Avenue. The people involved in the burglary were reported to be in a vehicle.

Officers encountered the vehicle, and it struck marked Chicago Police vehicles. An officer fired, striking one of the people in the vehicle.

The person who was shot was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. A second person was taken into custody and transported to a hospital in good condition. A third person fled the scene and is not in custody.

Two Chicago police officers were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A gun was recovered at the scene.
