On September 6, 2025, Chicago police were sent to a burglary-in-progress call near 800 N. Waller Avenue. The people involved in the burglary were reported to be in a vehicle.

Officers encountered the vehicle, and it struck marked Chicago Police vehicles. An officer then discharged their weapon, striking one of the individuals.

The person who was shot was taken to a hospital and pronounced deceased. A second individual was placed in custody and taken to a hospital in good condition. A third individual fled the scene and was not in custody.

Two officers were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A gun was recovered on scene.
