I'm still not convinced these cars are ready for prime time, although they are better than most human drivers...

PHOENIX, (July 2, 2024) — Just after 11 a.m. on June 19, a Phoenix police officer initiated a traffic stop on the Waymo, according to police dispatch records. The vehicle drove into oncoming traffic, ran a red light and "FREAKED OUT," said the dispatch records, which are typed in all capital letters.

The vehicle "encountered inconsistent construction signage" and went into an oncoming lane of traffic, according to Waymo.

The driverless car "was blocked from navigating back into the correct lane" for approximately 30 seconds, according to the company. That's when the officer pulled in behind the car.

"In an effort to clear the intersection, the Waymo vehicle proceeded forward a short distance and pulled into the next available parking lot," Waymo said, describing the traffic incident as lasting "approximately one minute."

The situation was cleared without further action. "UNABLE TO ISSUE CITATION TO COMPUTER," the police dispatch records say.

Ok. That's a first, as I thought that there still needs to be a human in the car for safety reasons !

Depends on the contract with the jurisdiction, but yeah. Some small time examples like campus transit buses that run the same loop over and over do pretty well without one.

A Chinese company has been running autonomous semi trucks (with loads) from Tucson to El Paso for the last couple of years. I don't think they have had any accidents so far.

When robot cars become common, motorcycle cops will no longer have anything to do, and will wind up reassigned to homeless monitoring, on bicycles.
