Dallas Officer Shoots Armed Robbery Suspect on S Lancaster
On July 4, 2024, at about 1 a.m., Dallas Police responded to a robbery in progress call in the 2900 block of South Lancaster Road. A 911 caller reported a robbery at an illegal game room. Officer Ruben Martinez was working covert surveillance nearby and went to a parking lot near the game room. He saw suspects run from the scene. One suspect, 34-year-old Timothy Jefferson, approached him while pointing a gun. Martinez fired at Jefferson. Martinez had not had time to put on his ballistic vest or activate his body-worn camera before the shooting. He put on his vest and activated the camera afterward, and the camera partially captured the shooting. Responding officers performed CPR on Jefferson until DFR arrived. Jefferson was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. No officers were injured. A handgun was recovered from the ground near Jefferson. Officers took additional suspects into custody near the scene, and a fourth suspect ran. The game room's manager was arrested and charged with keeping a gambling place. Additional charges are possible, and the investigation is ongoing.
