A Kent County jury convicted Jared James Chance in September 2019 of second-degree murder and other crimes in the killing and dismemberment of Ashley Young in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and a judge sentenced him to 100 to 200 years in prison.

Young, 31, was a Kalamazoo County / Oshtemo Township resident who worked nights and studied languages with plans to become an interpreter. She had recently ended a long-term relationship and was preparing to sign a lease on a new apartment. Chance, approximately 29 to 30 at the time, lived in an apartment building on the 900 block of Franklin Street. The two were prior acquaintances and friends, and Young had expressed interest in a possible relationship with him. Chance had broken into and robbed her years earlier.

Young and Chance were together at Mulligan's Pub and the nearby Eastown Hookah Lounge on the night of November 28 to 29, 2018. Surveillance footage showed them at the bar before they left after midnight. Young failed to meet her mother the next day to sign the lease and was never seen alive again. She was killed at or near Chance's apartment.

Young's mother and stepmother reviewed bar surveillance, contacted Chance, who gave shifting accounts, and went to his apartment area. On December 2, neighbor Mario Nelson traced a strong odor of decomposition in the basement and found Young's torso, with the head, arms and legs removed, wrapped in a bloody tarp. He called 911. Her arms, without hands, and legs, without feet, were found in a cardboard box on a stairwell landing. Her head, hands, feet and neck have never been recovered.

Investigators found Young's DNA on blood-stained items and tools, blood evidence throughout the apartment, additional saw blades, ammonia, latex gloves and spent .22-caliber casings. Surveillance showed Chance buying cleaning supplies and discarding Young's purse, while cell-phone location data placed him traveling toward his parents' home in Holland, Michigan. A reciprocating saw with human tissue was recovered from under a couch at the home of James and Barbara Chance. Investigators determined the parents had assisted their son by transporting items linked to the crime.

Chance was charged with open murder and related counts. The jury convicted him of second-degree murder, mutilation of a dead body, concealing a death and multiple counts of tampering with evidence. Judge Mark Trusock imposed the sentence on October 10, 2019. No clear, established motive emerged at trial, and the judge described the killing as completely senseless. Chance's appeals were denied, and he remains incarcerated.

Barbara Chance was charged with accessory after the fact to a felony and perjury. She entered a no-contest plea to both charges in early 2020. In June 2020, she was sentenced to 45 days in jail, one year of probation and fines. She has completed her sentence and probation.
