Re: The Forensic Examination and Autopsy

Fantastic post. I don't find anything gross or disturbing here. Really thorouhg explanation of authopsy. But, i have one question, where are internal organs, are they back in the body or thrown away as medical waste?
It's up to the pathologist and of course depending on the laws: they may be returned to the body cavities before the incision is closed, or retained for teaching, research, and diagnostic purposes. Usually, the pathologist keeps a small sample and returns the rest to the body; however, if the organ in question looks abnormal, the pathologist will probably want to save more than just a sample, sometimes the entire organ. In some cases is fair to ask to the relatives of the deceased when they give the consent for an autopsy to be performed (if this is needed) if they want the organs to be returned to the body. Some don't care, but some want the body to be kept as much entire as possible: often religions play a role in this.
It was a really good question as this wasn't covered in the OP at all.
Thanks.

Thank you for that explanation, I always wondered what happens with lungs, heart, guts, brain... I understand that organs must be examined, but retuning it back was a mystery to me. Again, this is excellent post, maybe a bit different than other autopsies i've watched but still one of the best.

Re: The Forensic Examination and Autopsy

I actually got the once in a lifetime chance to go see an autopsy performed, and one thing I can say its something that I will never forget. Not that it was gross or anything, it was really really really interesting and made me giddy

That post was amazing, and very informative. That is why I am going to school for forensics. Such interesting things you can do with it.
