Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread III

So,
What do you guys think about the Russian strategy of "removing the Russian flag" from Kherson administrative buildings and making it look as if they are retreating?
Is it some kind of diversion?
with the way the battlefield is monitored, i don't think it was. i think its just removing an obvious target or maybe it was moved like everything else.
pulling a trap like that requires a level of competence the Russian army has yet to demonstrate. a Russian diversion is usually to attack something, fail then claim it as a tactic.

Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread III

October 17, 2022
Following the massive Russian attack on Ukrainian infrastructure targets on October 10 and 11, the US decided to rush NASAMS (National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System) air defense missile system to Ukraine. Many reports suggest that Kyiv could get NASAMS by the end of the month.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is upbeat about the impending arrival of the NASAMS, just as he was upbeat when other Western weapon systems arrived in the past, such as Stringer, Starstreak, Switchblade, M777, HIMARS, Harpoons, HARM, etc.

White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told the press on October 12 that the US is speeding up the shipment of sophisticated NASAMS air defenses to Ukraine.

Russia has repeatedly used ground, air, and sea-launched cruise missiles to attack infrastructure, command & control center targets in Western Ukraine.

Terrain-hugging cruise missiles are difficult to detect and even more challenging to engage. They don’t fly straight to the target; they are routed through waypoints chosen to skirt enemy AD systems (radars, missile batteries, MANPADS) and confuse the defender about the eventual target.

The most effective and reliable defense against cruise missiles is a short-range target AD system like the Israeli SPYDER, Russian Pantsir, US NASAMS, and India’s QR-SAM.
Two NASAMS already in Ukraine, 8 more very soon.
The systems from Germany, France, Netherlands are better suited / more economic against lranian drones.

In addition to NASAMS, the Pentagon promises to deliever anti-drone equipment to Ukraine, including the VAMPIRE system.

On the subject of drone weapons - I'm surprised that bivouac'd troops don't assign someone in their unit to be on aerial lookout for drones, and is armed with a rifle or countermeasure of some sort. Drones seem to be the go-to anti-personnel and LAV destruction device in this war, and to rotate people on lookout duty for drones could save a bunch of lives and materiel.

Of course, I would like UA troops to employ that defensive measure, not RU.
They need this:

About pulling back the troops - could it be as simple as R&R for the troops that have been fighting there since the beginning? There have been many intercepted calls where soldiers complain that they were promised R&R but not allowed to leave until mobiks arrive.
Maybe its just a rotation of troops.
Pulling off a diversion at this scale seems unlikely to work...as Russians know that everything is monitored.

Could removing of the flag be because they moved the administration into another building behind the lines?

The Russians appear to have moved their Kherson administrative personnel to a town much closer to Crimea, can't remember the name of the town.

It's possible they are preparing Kherson city for an urban fight in order to inflict heavy losses on the ZSU. They know how bad Ukraine wants it back. The Russians at this point may have little desire to actually hold Kherson city, they just want ZSU to impale themselves on it, like what is happening to the Russians at Bakhmut. The ability for Russia to supply whatever units remain in Kherson will be virtually zero. Sacrificial lambs.

Re: Russian/Ukraine War Discussion Thread III

My brother in law (Gulf war USAF vet) said an A-10 flew back from Iraq and landed at Riyadh with like half of a wing and other significant damage. True?
I wouldn't be surprised as the A-10 is one bad ass machine & excellent in providing close air support to troops in contact.

It would be a very hard decision for me to pick between an A-10 & a Viper for a multi roll tasking mission.

I think that I would leave it up to a roll of the dice as both are excellent platforms & systems, IMO.

Ever since Elon's purchase went through, Twitter has changed drastically... and it's only been less than a week. Ukraine stuff is not as prolific and those poor NAFO dogs are being targeted. lol
