Sadly, for some people, they hear it enough over time they believe it. Close them off from the outside world (either by censorship or they are geographically isolated) and this seems to be something rather easy to do. The longer this is the case, the more susceptible they are. Then the rest of the world sees stuff like this and is absolutely flabbergasted.
