If true then it would be pretty big, a lot of the Ukrainian fighters/maidan ‘heroes’ wanted to preserve the Ukrainian identity which is why other languages were banned later. To make English official and mandatory will potentially piss off quite a few

"Zelensky proposes to officially change the dates of three holidays and determine the status of English

The President of Ukraine has submitted a bill to the Parliament that provides for changing the dates of holidays:

⏺ December 25 - Christmas (instead of January 7);
⏺ July 15 - Day of Ukrainian Statehood (instead of July 28);
⏺October 1 is the Day of Defenders and Defenders of Ukraine (instead of October 14).

In addition, a bill has been submitted to the Rada that officially defines English as one of the languages of international communication in Ukraine.

The project normalizes the peculiarities of the use of the English language in the work of state and local authorities, local governments, units of emergency assistance to the population, when crossing the state border, in the fields of education, culture, transport, healthcare, etc.

According to the document, English is required to know:

⏺heads of local administrations, officers,
⏺the police and prosecutors.
⏺tax and customs officers in the bodies, the list of which is established by the Cabinet of Ministers;
⏺heads of subjects of the public sector of the economy, the list of which is established by the Cabinet of Ministers and others."

I relate this to their plan of becoming a part of NATO. People in those positions will need to be bilingual. Plus, who knows, after the war, Ukraine may become a popular tourist destination. I wouldn't mind going over there to try their coffee.

I have no idea if any of that relates but there are a lot of countries that having bilingual officials.

The bill has been under preparation since June 17, as announced by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. The government aims to develop solutions that make English learning more accessible to the general population.

However, lawyer Andrii Smoly analyzed the bill of President Zelensky and noted that, in his opinion, the law de-facto narrows the use of the Ukrainian language in Ukraine.

As an example, he cites paragraph 4 of article 9 — “foreign films are shown in cinemas in English with Ukrainian subtitles.”

“That is, de-facto Ukrainian dubbing will simply disappear from cinemas from 2027. Why can’t you make Sessions in English in parallel?” Smoly wrote in his official Telegram channel.

In addition, Smoly stressed that according to the transitional provisions, the draft law is being amended so that films or programs can also be broadcast in English on television — at the expense of the state language.

That is a good way to learn and understand english instead of stupid dubbing english voices with native ones like they do in some countries. Imagine watching saving private ryan with Finnish or German dubs lol Same goes for French or Spanish movies with dubbed voices by the way.

I think the Hungarian president is opposing a lot of Ukraine stuff because they don’t protect Hungarian as a minority language anymore.

When China did this, some were saying that they are committing cultural genocide. I think English is good and connects the world so for me it would be great but I would like to know C14 and misanthropic division their opinion on this

I second this. As a slovak, I can confirm that dubbed movies sound bad compared to their original voices. It happens that some sentences are incorrectly translated from english and then it doesnt make sense in our language.

I wish we were forced to watch movies in english since childhood.
