I'm not incredibly knowledgeable on the situation but basically... the RSF (Rapid Support Forces) used to fight on behalf of the government/military. In a coup in Oct 2021 the (SAF) Sudanese Air Force and the RSF, working together, took over the civilian government system. Since then, tension between the RSF and SAF has been building for months before the conflict started around 15 April.

There was a plan which was supported internationally to launch a new transition to in government with civilian parties. A final deal was negotiated between all parties and due to be signed in early April. Both the SAF and the RSF were required to give up power but two main issues remained unsolved. One was the timetable for the RSF to be integrated into regular armed forces and second, the chain of command between the army and the RSF leaders and the question of civilian oversight.

Fighting broke out and both sides blamed each other for provocations. SAF accused the RSF of illegal mobilization and the RSF said the army tried to take full control in a plot with Bashir loyalists (autocrat Omar al-Bashir was overthrown four years ago).

There are also a lot of ethnic, religious and political clashes intermingled in this region all together.
