2023 Conflict in Sudan, Africa (Mega Thread)
(This post has been merged into this thread) Violence is spilling over in Sudan due to recent coups and a rivalry between the Sudan Military commanded by Army chief General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and paramilitary faction RSF(Rapid Support Forces) led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti. Outside of Khartoum, civilians are being targeted. In this video it appears to be the RSF (judging only by their uniforms) committing these crimes but I cannot say for sure. ![]() General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan (left). Re: 2023 Conflict in Sudan, Africa (Mega Thread)
I decided to wait about a week before making a thread. Big mistake... Background (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Sudan_clashes) On 15 April 2023, clashes broke out across Sudan, mainly in the capital city of Khartoum and the Darfur region between the rival factions of the country's military government. As of 20 April, almost 330 people have been killed and almost 3,200 injured. The fighting began with attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on key government sites. Airstrikes, artillery and heavy gunfire were reported across Sudan including in Khartoum. As of 15 April 2023, both RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo and Sudan's de facto leader and army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan claimed to control key government sites, including the general military headquarters, the Presidential Palace, Khartoum International Airport, Burhan's official residence and Sudan TV headquarters. Please see the Wiki link for more information and history in this region. EDIT: it looks like another member was posting something related to the conflict roughly the same time I started this post. ![]() Posted 15 April 2023 | Videos 1-7 posted together "The Sudanese rebels announced the seizure of an air base in Jabal Auliya, a motorized infantry base in Omdurman Bayan and a number of military facilities in El Fasher. Also, the leader of the rebels, Mohammed Hamdan, brazenly called on the military to switch to their side "to build democracy." The army continues fighting with the use of aviation in Khartoum, as well as in Merov. A number of neighboring countries called on both sides to end the conflict and sit down at the negotiation table."

Re: 2023 Conflict in Sudan, Africa (Mega Thread)
Posted 15 April "The chief of the General Staff of Sudan, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, said that the army controls all key buildings of the government and the command of troops. He considers the aim of the rebels to prevent the transition of various paramilitary formations under the unified command of the army. In addition, the commander warns the mutinous special forces, urging them to return to their positions and stop resisting, otherwise loyalists from other parts of the country will arrive in Khartoum. Rebel forces suffered losses during the fighting in the capital, but continue to resist. They also published a photo with captured Egyptian soldiers captured at the Merov airbase."

Re: 2023 Conflict in Sudan, Africa (Mega Thread)
Posted 15 April 1. "Sudanese rebels communicate with captive Egyptians and loyalists. According to the stripes of the Egyptians, it was possible to identify them as belonging to the Egyptian special forces al-Sakka (they are trained by the American military). Usually, these special forces are used to fight IS in Sinai, what they did in Sudan is not yet clear, as well as the reasons for the presence of Egyptian fighters at the Sudanese airbase. Official Cairo has not yet commented on the situation with the arrest of its servicemen." 2. "The Sudanese military reported the defeat of rebel forces in the city of Nyala, demonstrating the location of one of the clashes." 3. "The fighting in Khartoum continues, the rebels report successes in different parts of the country and call on loyalists to lay down their arms. It is also known that most of the country's capital is de-energized. According to Mohammed Hamdan Long, 90% of the country's military facilities are under the control of the rebels, and only the central command of the army resists. At the same time, he warns of readiness for long fighting if necessary."

Re: 2023 Conflict in Sudan, Africa (Mega Thread)
Posted 15 April "A car of the National Guard of Niger was blown up by an IED near the village of Gekeru in the Diffa area on the border with Nigeria on April 13th, as a result of which 3 soldiers were killed and 4 more wounded (see Photos 1-3). During the day after that, two more similar attacks occurred (see Photos 4-5), one near the same village, the second near the town of Bosso, as a result of which 4 more soldiers were killed and 8 wounded. Earlier, the Islamists announced another similar attack on the Niger military in the Difa area on April 8th, when 2 soldiers were killed. The more active use of IEDs by terrorists has become a problem for the Armed Forces of Nigeria and Niger. Militia loyal to the Government of Nigeria, a checkpoint and barracks of the Nigerian army in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states were also attacked. In addition, IS militants first reported their presence in the state of Dzhigava, where they used an IED killing three Christians in the town of Dutse."

Re: 2023 Conflict in Sudan, Africa (Mega Thread)
Posted April 16. The source makes a good point that both sides are making claims of success, losses, etc and its hard to know what's true and what is not. "The Taliban are calling on the parties of the conflict in Sudan to cease fire and resolve issues through dialogue in order to prevent a civil war that foreign states can use to invade the country. About the situation in Sudan, we can say that the arena of hostilities is expanding from one city to another and from one province to another, covering almost the entire country. The heaviest fighting continues in Khartoum, which is controlled by both sides. Both sides suffered losses both in technology and in human resources. Both sides declare their successes. So it is unclear who is saying the truth and who is not."

Posted 16 April "The Sudanese rebels were able to advance to the building of the Palace of the Republic in Khartoum, they also reported the capture of a large group of loyalists. Intense fighting in the city, with the use of tanks and aircraft continues. At the same time, the rioters refuted the statements of the government forces about the return of the Merove airfield to loyalist control."
