The 2017 crash of a West Wind Aviation ATR 42 aircraft, which resulted in multiple serious injuries but no fatalities, was primarily attributed to ice contamination, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) concluded in its investigation. The crash, a stark reminder of the perils of winter aviation, has since prompted a reevaluation of de-icing procedures and pilot training across Canada.

On the evening of December 13, 2017, the ATR 42-320, operating a scheduled passenger flight from Fond-du-Lac Airport to Stony Rapids Airport, crashed shortly after takeoff. The aircraft, carrying 22 passengers and 3 crew members, struck trees and terrain less than a mile from the airport under challenging winter conditions.

Miraculously, there were no immediate fatalities, though several passengers sustained serious injuries. The incident marked one of the most significant aviation accidents in Saskatchewan in recent years and brought to light the challenges of regional aviation safety in harsh weather conditions.

The TSB's thorough investigation revealed that ice on the aircraft's surfaces played a critical role in the crash. The ice, which had formed while the aircraft was on the ground, was not adequately removed before takeoff, significantly impairing the plane's performance.
