they "landed" facing the wrong way on the runway. So the antenna and the mound it's built on is actually positioned at the beginning on the runway |

I think that is exactly what happened. There is no way a bird strike takes out your landing gear in a 737. As blancolirio points out (vid in post above) 7 minutes between bird strike and landing isn't enough time to run all the necessary checklists, meaning pilots didn't attend to everything they needed to ... like lowering the gear. They panicked and turned a minor emergency into a major one. |

You do realise that runways can be used in both directions? I have attached the current aerodrome chart from Nuan International Airport. As you can see, the runway is called 01/19 because it can be used in either direction. |

Juan Browne concludes that due to the high speed and lack of deployment of landing gear, flaps, etc., the jet was acting like it had no hydraulic controls, and may have had one engine off, as it touched down. The main hydraulic pumps are driven by the engines, so if they lost both engines upon final approach due to multiple bird strikes, the pilots would have had to switch to backup electric hydraulic pumps, all while keeping the jet airborne, restarting engines, carving another approach, and lowering the landing gear. Due to no flaps or gear, the plane did a high-speed gear-up landing, and that creates a ground turbulence effect that floats the plane and prevents it from digging into the tarmac, similar to hydroplaning a car on wet asphalt. |
