South Korean Helicopter Crashes in Downtown Gwangju
A South Korean firefighting helicopter crashed in the city of Gwangju, approximately 330 km south of Seoul, resulting in the death of five crew members and injuries to a bystander. The crash occurred in a densely populated area of the city, known for its one-room apartments and commercial buildings. The accident was reported to firefighting authorities at around 10:53 a.m. local time. The helicopter, carrying five firefighters including two pilots, an engineer, and two rescuers, tragically crashed into the sidewalk beside a road in downtown Gwangju. All crew members on board were confirmed dead. A female student waiting at a nearby bus stop sustained minor injuries due to the crash and was promptly taken to a hospital for treatment. Witnesses reported that the helicopter appeared to be spinning at a low altitude before the crash, as if attempting to find a less populated area for an emergency landing. The crash site's proximity to a school, an apartment complex, and single-family houses, all within about 10 meters, highlighted the potential for even greater casualties had the helicopter crashed into these dwellings. Firefighters at the scene successfully extinguished the fire and began recovery operations for the remains of the crashed helicopter. While adverse weather conditions are believed to have contributed to the crash, authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of this tragic incident. |

Re: South Korean Helicopter Crashes in Downtown Gwangju
I've never seen a helicopter go down with a nose-first attitude like that! From the news story, it sounds like it might have tried to auto-rotate before just ditching it in a vacant space to avoid buildings. Brutal, either way. |
