Azerbaijan's Armed Forces Shoot Down Armenian Mi-24 Helicopter
Tensions escalated in the South Caucasus region on Wednesday following the downing of a military helicopter by Azerbaijan's armed forces. Armenia's Defense Ministry reported that the aircraft, belonging to Nagorno-Karabakh, a territory within Azerbaijan but controlled by ethnic Armenians, was shot down during a training flight. This incident marks the first of its kind since the 1994 ceasefire that concluded a war over the disputed area. The helicopter, carrying three crew members, was reportedly engaged in a routine training exercise when it was targeted. Azerbaijani authorities acknowledged shooting down the aircraft, claiming it was an Armenian helicopter attempting an assault on Azeri soldiers near the heavily mined and guarded line of contact around Nagorno-Karabakh. In a statement, the Azeri Defense Ministry asserted that the helicopter had made aggressive maneuvers towards Azeri positions before being shot down. The ministry further announced that an army officer had been awarded a medal 'For Distinguished Military Service' for his role in the incident, citing vigilance and heroism. The destruction of the helicopter has led to increased tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan, an oil-rich nation. Armenian Defense Minister Artsrun Hovhannisyan warned of severe consequences for Azerbaijan, stating on his Facebook page that the escalation would bring "very painful" repercussions. |
