Prototype Military Transport Aircraft Catches Fire, Crashes in Russia
On August 17, 2021, a prototype Ilyushin Il-112V military transport aircraft crashed during a test flight in the Moscow region, resulting in the deaths of all three crew members on board. The aircraft, operated by the United Aircraft Corporation, was being developed as a replacement for the ageing Antonov An-26. According to eyewitness accounts and video footage of the incident, the aircraft was flying at low altitude with one of its wings on fire before it made a sharp turn and plummeted to the ground. The crash occurred near the Kubinka airfield during the final approach for landing. The right engine of the plane caught fire before the crash, according to preliminary information. Among the deceased was Hero of Russia Nikolai Kuimov. Russian investigators launched a criminal investigation into the crash, exploring potential causes including pilot error and equipment failure. The Rostec defense conglomerate confirmed the accident and stated that an internal commission would be assembled to investigate the incident. The Il-112V was still in its testing stages at the time of the crash and is designed for transporting and parachuting light weaponry and equipment, cargo, and military personnel. |
