Pilot Mark Sampson Killed When His Plane Crashes During Airshow
On Tuesday night, a tragic accident occurred during an airshow at Charles Prince Airport in Zimbabwe, resulting in the death of South African pilot Mark “Sammy” Sampson, aged 54. Sampson was a member of the Cape Town-based Marksmen Aerobatic Team. The incident happened while the Marksmen Aerobatic Team was performing in Zimbabwe. They were on their return leg from a successful performance at the Kenyan Defence Force (KDF) Museum Air Show in Nairobi, held in conjunction with the Aero Club of East Africa. A video captured during the airshow shows Sampson's aircraft climbing before it suddenly lost control and plummeted to the ground. Mark Sampson was described as an outstanding aviator, an honored team member, and a trusted and loyal friend by his team. Before dedicating himself to aerobatic flying with the Marksmen Aviation Team, Sampson had a distinguished career in aviation, having served as a captain at Cathay Pacific and a first officer at Nationwide Airlines.  |

No time to recover at that altitude. He felt something and tried to climb so he could assess the problem and things spiraled out of control (literally) and then…thud.

I don't think that's the case.after the slow roll, the sharp pull up was probably intentional and part of his show. Then something broken empenage and he lost the ability to control pitch and yaw.

Looks to me like he was trying to do a Lomcevak, and found out he was too low to recover. His manuever is completed, and the aircraft is stabilized, but headed straight down.
