FlyDubai Flight 981 Crashes at Rostov-on-Don Airport in Russia

FlyDubai Flight 981, a Boeing 737-800 aircraft, crashed on March 19, 2016, while attempting to land at Rostov-on-Don Airport in Russia. The flight, which originated from Dubai, faced challenging weather conditions, including poor visibility and strong winds.

All 62 people on board, comprising 55 passengers and 7 crew members, tragically lost their lives in the crash. The passengers were primarily Russian citizens, with a few foreign nationals.

The subsequent investigation led by Russian aviation authorities pointed to a combination of factors contributing to the tragedy. These included adverse weather conditions, pilot error, and possible disorientation during a go-around procedure after an initial failed landing attempt.

The investigation also highlighted issues related to pilot fatigue and training, as well as the effectiveness of the airport's navigation systems in handling difficult weather conditions.

FlyDubai Boeing 737-800 Crash

A passenger jet has crashed in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, killing all 55 passengers and seven crew on board, officials say.

The FlyDubai Boeing 737-800, coming from Dubai, missed the runway as it attempted to land at 03:50 local time (00:50 GMT) on Saturday.

It is not clear what caused the crash but poor visibility and high winds are being considered as a factor.

CCTV footage showed an explosion and a huge flash after the plane crashed.

"The aircraft hit the ground and broke into pieces," the Investigative Committee of Russia said on its website.

Reports say the plane abandoned its initial attempt to land and circled for two hours before crashing at the second attempt.

Air disasters timeline

It came down about 250m (800ft) short of the start of the runway in Rostov, some 950km (600 miles) south of Moscow.

Most of the passengers on board flight FZ981 were Russian, the regional governor said. Another official said three foreigners were on the passenger list, according to Reuters.

Six of the crew were non-Russians, a Russian emergency ministry statement said, the news agency reported.

About 700 rescue workers were sent to the site of the crash and the fire was extinguished, media reports said.

A search is under way for the plane's flight recorders and an investigation has been opened into the cause of the crash.

Other flights have been diverted away from the airport.

n a statement on its Facebook page, the airliner confirmed the "tragic accident" and said an emergency response has been put in place.

Boeing said on Twitter its team was working to gather more details.

FlyDubai, a low cost carrier launched in 2009 with a hub in Dubai, operates flights to some 90 destinations.

Sorry. I've just posted a virtually identical post in the news section. I didn't see this post here.

That plane was on fire BEFORE it touched down. What pilot circles for 2 hrs. They divert to another airport. Think this story is just getting started.

The aircraft LOOKED as though it were on fire prior to touchdown. There are landing lights, nav lights etc all of which are extremely bright, particularly when reflected and particularly at night. We don't know for a fact that the plane was on fire. Looking at video and photographs of the wreckage, there is nothing to indicate that it was, either.

Yes, very true. Could have been anything. After my initial kneejerk reaction, looked again. Wind was CRAZY and circling for that long is not unusual. Windshear maybe?

They haven't found out the cause yet but experts say it was a human error or a technical malfunction.
flydubai will additionally organise a programme of hardship payments to the families amounting to $20,000 per passenger, in accordance with our Conditions of Carriage, with the aim of addressing immediate financial needs," a flydubai spokesperson said.

It is unusual to circle for 2hrs when i read they could have diverted to an airport 15min away.
