even with unlimited altitude they would never have recovered the airplane with all the weight shifted to the rear; it was no longer flyable and they were doomed

the pilot tries to save the plane until last second. You see him lowering the landing gear right before impact as he levels the wings.

Not likely, for one, the gear was most likely still down from take off. Also, you can't see well enough to determine any movement as landing gear that size is extremely slow moving...
