I am wondering if it was pilot error...or what? I mean those things pretty much fly themselves

Re: Death Video of Air Cargo Boeing 747 Crash at Bagram Airfield

yeah, obvious that his pitch was way too steep and by the time he recovered he had lost airspeed and most likely stalled the engines, not that it would have mattered...sad
The wings stalled (aka: stopped producing lift) because of the excessive angle of attack due to the CG shift. When an aircraft is said to "stall", it has nothing to do with the engines...it's an aerodynamic principle.

Does anyone else wonder what the guy recording the footage is doing to his dog?

cargo shift from a steep climb caused the stall. there was nothing the pilot could do.

Re: Death Video of Air Cargo Boeing 747 Crash at Bagram Airfield

I had a load shift once when pulling high G's pulling out of a dive. Plane crashed and was destroyed. Fortunately, it was a remote control airplane I was flying. LOL. Battery was not secure and shifted to the rear making the airplane tail heavy and uncontrollable.

On maiden flights I always err on the side of making the airplane too nose heavy. You can deal with that. A tail heavy airplane is very difficult if not impossible to control.

RIP
