Cockpit Audio From Pacific Southwest Airlines, Flight 182

September 25, 1978
San Diego, California
Pacific Southwest Airlines, Flight 182
Boeing B-727-214
N533PS

This was a midair collision. The PSA was descending and about to land at Lindbergh Field. The Cessna was climbing while engaged in practice approaches. The 727 overtook and struck the Cessna from the rear.

The primary cause was the PSA crew lost sight of the Cessna and did not make that fact known to the ATC. The ATC failed to realize from the PSA transmissions that they lost sight of the Cessna. One hundred thirty-five killed on the PSA, two on the Cessna and seven on the ground.

You can see more pictures from the crash of flight 182 here:

Re: Cockpit Audio From Pacific Southwest Airlines, Flight 182

Growing up in San Diego, this flight was a legacy that adults would talk about quite a bit. I wasn't alive when the event happened, but seeing the faces of people who worked on the scene whenever they have to travel is a thing to behold.

Re: Cockpit Audio From Pacific Southwest Airlines, Flight 182

Out of all the plane crashes this is the one that bothers me the most. Maybe because I've flown into San Diego and I know what its like and that airport has always been one the most dangerous. Also, seeing how most of the passengers that where killed looked like they just went thru a meat grinder, with body parts strewn everywhere, in trees, in houses, it was nasty bloody mess. Many 1st responders were traumatized by that event. I only wished that the guy I've seen filming for a TV reporter on scene right after the crash, would share his video. I have yet to find that film and chances are, I'll never see it.

Horrific disaster. I’ve seen pictures of the gore that followed, body parts on roofs, splashed against walls etc. not sure if it was here or some other site. But it stuck with me.

Re: Cockpit Audio From Pacific Southwest Airlines, Flight 182

I grew up in San Diego. My dad told me a story about how he was on the phone with his friend who lived in North Park when the plane went down.
He could hear the impact in the background. Being that my dad had spent some time in the Air Force, he was quite familiar with that sound. Something you never forget.
