Aloha Airlines Flight 243 Roof Failure at 24,000 Feet
On April 28, 1988, the roof of an Aloha Airlines jet ripped away in mid-air at 24,000 feet. Passengers were exposed to winds exceeding 300 mph, temperatures as low as -50 F, and thin air. A flight attendant was swept from the aircraft and was never found. Despite the major fuselage failure, the aircraft landed safely. The incident became a major catalyst for additional corrosion and fatigue inspections on high-cycle aircraft.  ·
