1977 Tenerife Runway Collision Killed 583
On March 27, 1977, two Boeing 747 passenger jets collided on a foggy, overcrowded runway on Tenerife in the Spanish Canary Islands. All aboard the KLM aircraft were killed. Sixty-one people survived aboard the Pan Am aircraft, but 583 people died in total. Emergency crews initially went to the KLM wreckage, unaware that the Pan Am 747 was also burning nearby in the fog. The collision remains the deadliest accident in aviation history.
