On September 29, 2006, the Gol Boeing collided with an Embraer Legacy jet over the northern region of Mato Grosso state. The Boeing crashed in a densely forested area, leaving no survivors, while the Legacy jet managed to land safely with its seven occupants unharmed. The accident was a catalyst for a nationwide aviation crisis, bringing to light severe deficiencies in air traffic control and safety protocols.

Investigations revealed that the Legacy was instructed to fly at 37,000 feet from São José dos Campos to Brasília and then descend to 36,000 feet. However, it remained at 37,000 feet, the same altitude at which the Gol Boeing was cruising in the opposite direction. A critical factor in the collision was the deactivation of the Legacy's transponder, a device that communicates with ground control. The pilots of the Legacy claimed they did not turn off the transponder, leading to questions about its operation and design.

The aftermath of the tragedy saw significant repercussions in Brazilian aviation. The accident was the second-worst in the country's history in terms of fatalities, surpassed only by the TAM Airlines crash at Congonhas Airport in São Paulo in July 2007, which claimed 199 lives. These back-to-back disasters, combined with ongoing issues at airports and among air traffic controllers, led to the resignation of the Minister of Defense, Waldir Pires, and changes at the top of the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC).

The Gol Flight 1907 disaster and subsequent TAM crash have prompted extensive investigations and calls for reform in Brazilian aviation. Two parliamentary commissions of inquiry were established to investigate the crisis, aiming to improve safety standards and prevent future tragedies.
