Re: WWII - Rudolph Hess Introduces Horst Wessel Lied & Triumph of The Will

EDIT: sorry I realise i'm a bit late to this topic and understand it's about the film, but I decided to chuck my few pennies in!

I have to agree with Feirefez on this topic.

I think Hitler's character can be summed up as capricious. He wasn't particularly brilliant at much.

The autobahn had been planned long before the Nazi party were even close to power - chiefly it was forced labour that allowed Hitler to progress with the construction of them.

He made a whole catalogue of military blunders that eventually led to the capitulation of Germany; to be summary - Operation Barbarossa was delusional, it was a bi-product of Hitler's dogmatic lebensraum ideology. If he'd attacked Britain we most likely would have been forced to surrender.

Ian Kershaw (the authority on Hitler and the Third Reich) said that nothing positive can be said about Hitler's time in power. He argues that art, music, literature, architecture were all stifled under the regime.

He continues that Nazi economics were 'utterly predatory in nature and devoid of potential as a durable system.' Essentially a modern form of slavery within state directed capitalism.

He was an opportunist. The Anschluss was met with little resistance (if any) and the invasion of Czechoslovakia was met with pitiful resistance. I would also posit that he was deluded to think Britain would let him walk in to Poland.

His rise to power is largely thanks to (in my opinion); political naivety - Von Papen thought he would be able to control Hitler if he appointed him Chancellor, among other things; the economic situation in Germany - Hitler's public image was one of a selfless and incorrupt man (which was quite the contrary); he capitalised on the dejection of the German people in the aftermath of Versailles - he was seen as a rebuilder of the nation’s strength.
Hitler was an opportunistic, genocidal maniac, intent on destruction (a trait that never left him!) with a probable Oedipus complex!
